February 2012 Police Report
This month’s Safer Neighbourhood Team report brings more low figures with just 14 crimes reported in the month of January compared to 28 for the same time period last year. The anti-social behaviour figures are double that of the previous year but still only 12 reports which is incredibly low in comparison to other residential areas.
We have had a good response to our offer to give Crime Prevention Advice for the safety of your homes; several residents contacted us and have hopefully taken up our advice.
However, there were 2 dwelling burglaries reported, one in Dunyeats Road where entry was gained by forcing a rear door while the occupants were out and jewellery was stolen. The other property was in York Road, entry was gained by forcing a ground floor window, it is not known if anything was stolen.
There is a common theme here with burglaries in our area where entry has been gained or attempted via rear doors or windows. Please be extra vigilant when securing any ground floor doors or windows, or windows that could be accessed while standing on a flat roof. Do this even when you are at home as distraction burglars often work in pairs. While you speak to one person at the front door, the other will walk round the back and let themselves in unbeknown to you because you are being distracted.
There was also one attempted burglary to a workshop in Clarendon Road – the owner heard some banging and disturbed two males trying to force open the locked doors. They ran off empty handed.
Whilst there were no thefts of vehicles this month, one was broken into in Wentworth Drive and had the seat covers stolen.
If you are registered to Ringmaster you will already be aware that a young male was reported for graffiti in the subway under the roundabout, he has received a Restorative Justice Reprimand for this and cleaned the graffiti off the walls himself.
Of the other reports five relate to thefts, the ones of note are that of a mountain bike even though it had been locked up by the owner; and two thefts of scrap metal and copper which is happening more often throughout the country due its rising value. The other crimes relate to domestic incidents and that of exposure.
On Friday 3rd February around 3pm there was an attempted distraction burglary at a residential address in Lower Blandford Road, Broadstone. A male and female were stopped in the area, arrested and detained by police. They have subsequently been charged with attempted burglary.
On Thursday 9th February around 4pm a suspicious male was seen in a resident’s garden in Rempstone Road. The male was described as aged approximately 24 years, of stocky build, wearing a workman’s jacket and jeans and had an Irish accent. When challenged by a neighbour he stated that he was from the “Water board” and unblocking drains in the area due to reports of flooding as a result of freezing. When the neighbour said he was going to call the Police the male walked off.
This is a common method of distraction burglary whereby the offender pretends to be from a service provider to gain entry to your home. In fact there is no longer a “Water board” so this should raise alarm bells if used.
Please continue to lock all external doors and windows when not in use and remember to use a doorchain, if fitted, when opening the door.
Always ask to see an Identity card or phone the company themselves to confirm the visit. If you are still unsure, tell them to leave your property and call the Police on 101.
These people tend to prey on the vulnerable, so please, if your neighbour is elderly or vulnerable, keep an eye out for them as the resident above did – it could prevent a serious incident.
Our current priorities as a result of talking to residents along with the Public Drop-ins and SNT Panel meeting on 01st February are:
- Speeding / Inconsiderate driving in Ridgeway, Broadstone (3 votes)
- Speeding in Merley Lane, Merley (2 votes)
The majority of votes were “No Issues”.
We will be at the monthly Surgery in the Library along with a member of the Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch on 24th March between 1030 and 1130am.
The next Public Drop-in at The Junction coffee shop, Station Approach will be at 6pm on Wednesday 21st March.
As always, we will continue to do our utmost to ensure that crime and anti-social behaviour remain low in the Broadstone area. Please help us to help you by reporting any incidents you see or hear. This can be done by contacting us on the new 101 number or 999 in an emergency.
For non-crime community concerns, your Safer Neighbourhood Team can be contacted directly on 07876 391 332, or by emailing us at b&m.snt@dorset.pnn.police.uk.
We are seeking your assistance in tackling our new priority of targetting rogue traders by carrying out the following actions:
1. Avoid accepting work or goods from doorstep callers.
2. Notify us as soon as possible if you have suspicions as to the legitimacy of any person(s) offering their services on your doorstep.
3. Look out for those in your community who may be elderly or
vulnerable by contacting us should you have concerns or suspicions about tradesmen working at their address.
We can be contacted on the new 101 number or 999 in an emergency.
For non-crime community concerns, your Safer Neighbourhood Team can be contacted directly on 07876 391 332, or by emailing us at b&m.snt@dorset.pnn.police.uk
